Professional-quality editing is not drop-off-and-pick-up. It's a conversation between editor and author: drafts exchanged, queries raised, precision achieved together. We can work in person over an afternoon or by email over days.
How the editing process works
For academics, lawyers, and business professionals, poor editing can destroy a document. I started my career as a newspaper editor, and I've worked as both a teacher and an attorney at the intersection of science and global policy. My job is to interrogate your work at every level, tightening, clarifying, and strengthening your message for its intended audience. If you hire me to edit a document for you, it's going to involve a conversation, and the final draft will reflect the work that we both put in.
What I edit
I am happy to assist with academic journal articles, dissertations, conference papers, grant proposals, legal briefs, contracts, policy documents, EU regulatory submissions, and scientific manuscripts, among other documents. I am particularly experienced in environmental science and law, international policy, and biomedical research papers.
What editing is not
My first job when I meet a new client is to dispel the misperceptions surrounding the role of editor: Professional-level editing is not just about fixing mistakes and correcting grammar. It's not translation, and it's not ghostwriting. I think of editing as possibly my strongest professional skill, but I cannot edit effectively without an equal commitment from you, the writer.
